RANGERS VS ST. JOHNSTONE – PLAYER RATINGS

RANGERS VS ST. JOHNSTONE – PLAYER RATINGS

Rangers kicked off our league cup campaign with a win over St. Johnstone, bouncing back from a disappointing result against Dynamo Kiev During the week. Overall Rangers looked to have improved both on performance level as well as the result overall. Rangers seem to have a clearer style of play both on and off the ball which was pleasing to see, and I believe with stronger finishing we would have seen a much more comfortable looking result.

Butland- 7

With a few saves and a few catches of crossing balls in, Jack never got much of a chance to play. However, this is to be anticipated when you play for the Rangers. The most crucial thing is to stay focused and aware of the opportunities that do present themselves to us. There are no grievances regarding anything Butland did during the game.

Tavernier – 5

Thought Tav was a little underwhelming in the game, both moving forward and on defense. Given that he has begun this season more slowly than any other, I believe it is evident that Tav never had a complete preseason behind him. Since the start of the season, he appears to have lost a yard of pace and to be frequently outpaced. He only managed a few shots from outside the area that were flashed over the bar in terms of offensive production. There were a few good corners in the box, but nobody seemed to be using them.

Souttar – 7

His performance was commendable. Never faced many significant offensive threats, much like Butland. He made really solid block to Deny St Johnstone left back putting it home after he went past Tav in the box. Distribution of the ball was outstanding as well throughout the game. The clean sheet and the absence of defensive blunders were both positive developments.

Propper – 6

Sadly had to come off hurt in the second half and was replaced by Ben Davies; hopefully nothing serious that will keep him out of future games. Again, looked well enough and made a couple good tackles during the game.

THE MIDFIELD
Sterling – 6

Thought Sterling had an okay game overall, looked a lot better than his cameo against Kiev mid week. Again never had too much to deal with defensively hence why he potentially looked quieter, but looked good on the ball and kept it moving into the likes of Diamonde and Cerny throughout the game.

Dowell – 5

Thought Dowell was incredibly quiet throughout the game, never contributed a great deal whether that be going forward or defensively. Not any clear notable errors made from Dowell but nothing to rave about either.

Diamonde – 7

I thought Dio played a nice game and would definitely like to see him continue to play in the future. I thought his performance was better than Lawrence’s most recent efforts in that regard. Some excellent maneuvers and a pass through to his three opponents in front of him. Overall excellent performance, and it appears that this is the position where he can be more effective and have a greater impact on the games.

Matondo

I thought Matondo’s game was passable. When he picked up the ball and ran at the defender, putting them under pressure, he seemed like a serious threat. I would have preferred more poise from him in the final third when trying to locate the final ball, even if he was able to pull off a couple of on-target efforts. He is undoubtedly getting into nice parts of the pitch.
