After the transfer window closes, Brendan Rodgers acknowledged he has no idea if Matt O’Riley would still play for the Celtics.
The midfield player has been the talk of the window thus far, with Leicester City, Southampton, and Atalanta among the teams who have contacted the Hoops over their asking price.
Rodgers maintains that the club does not have to sell if they do not receive the money they desire, even though the £25 million plus target has not yet been reached.
However, the boss was pragmatic enough to realize that there’s still a chance the money may arrive at this late point, which is why he was unable to give fans a clear response on their star player.
When asked if he thought O’Riley will be at Parkhead at the start of September, the Northern Irishman replied candidly to the Premier Sports panel, “I don’t know.” You can see what a tremendously gifted player he is.
It’s as easy as that: if we don’t get our worth for him, he will remain here. Though he appears content here, there must be a compelling reason for him to go.
I don’t think about it too much. We are all familiar with the Celtic model, which states that players will develop and reach a point where they surpass the club in terms of pay. But we keep working with him till that time.”
