Final U20 Women’s World Cup training camp for the Falconets will take place in Columbia.

The FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, which begins on August 31, will see Nigeria’s U20 women’s football team, the Falconets, begin a two-week final training camp in Bogota, Colombia, on Sunday. The Falconets are the competition’s two-time finalists and have advanced to the quarterfinals in 2006, 2018, and 2022 in addition to making it to the tournament’s semi-finals in Japan twelve years prior. They defeated Tanzania and Burundi in the qualifications to earn one of Africa’s spots in the championship game this year. Under the guidance of Coach Christopher Musa Danjuma, the team’s first preparations took place over four weeks in Abuja, where they played a number of friendly matches and only suffered one defeat.

I wish to express my gratitude to the NFF for organizing the two-week camping trip in Colombia. This will assist the team in getting used to the environment and adjusting to the new environment before the championship starts. Before the team took off on Turkish Airlines for Bogota, Danjuma declared, “We will make the most of this opportunity,” in an interview with thenff.com. After winning silver medals and making it to the semi-finals in the past, Sports Minister John Owan Enoh encouraged the team to go for the ultimate prize during their meeting with them on Friday.

“Your forebears performed admirably, making it to the semifinals once and the final twice. It’s your chance to capture the trophy and advance Nigeria. I applaud the NFF for setting up this last camp in Colombia, which will guarantee that you are ready for the competition. You have the support of the entire country, and I think you will make us proud.

The Falconets have a rich history of competing in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. Since the tournament’s founding in 2002, they have represented their country in Thailand in 2004, Russia in 2006, Chile in 2008, Germany in 2010, and most recently, Costa Rica in 2022. The worldwide pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 edition.

Nigeria was placed in Group D this year, along with Germany, Venezuela, and the Korea Republic. At the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota, the Falconets will play their first game on September 1 against the Korean Republic. On September 4, they will play Germany. At the Estadio Pascual Guerrero in Cali on September 7, they will play their last group match versus Venezuela. Africa now has four participants in the event, which has 24 teams total: Nigeria, Morocco, Cameroon, and Ghana. Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali are the three locations where matches will take place, and the Falconets are keen to get off to a fast start in their quest to advance to the knockout stages.
