Dallas Cowboys rookie Tyler Guyton looking to get up to speed at left tackle

The NFL draft selection in the first round is a physical marvel. Guyton possesses the mindset necessary to lead an offensive line, according to offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. And Guyton has a chance to start on opening day since his primary opponent at left tackle is out due to injury. How quickly Guyton can bring everything together is the question. “I feel like when you think about it too much, it usually messes you up, so I´m just gonna go do the best I can and put my best foot forward,” Guyton stated. Chuma Edoga suffered a significant toe injury in the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on September 8, but there was always a chance Guyton would play from the opening snap against Cleveland on September 8.

These practices, which included a combined workout with the Rams on Wednesday, demonstrated why Guyton was selected 29th overall in the draft and why he still needs improvement. After failing to grab hold of Rams first-round pick Jared Verse while making an inside move during a live team period, Guyton was called for a holding penalty. However, in individual drills, Guyton countered Verse´s spin move with rapid footwork and then gave him a pancaking. “I mean, his ability to kick and slide and redirect is impressive,” Schottenheimer remarked of Guyton, a 322-pound 6-foot-7 athlete. “He’s a phenomenal athlete. We must tidy up some of the mess left by his hands, punches, and other such actions.” Some of those problems were visible against Cowboys teammate Micah Parsons on Thursday.

What matters more to Guyton is getting as many quality looks as possible after he took up football in his senior year of high school and played 29 games in four seasons at TCU and Oklahoma.

“Once again, iron sharpens iron, so I´m going against the best of the best,” Guyton said. “You win some, you lose some, but we´re getting better with each and every play.”

Even with that limited experience, Schottenheimer was impressed with the determination Guyton brought to his first preseason game.

“Practice, he´s out there, he´s working with a purpose,” Schottenheimer said. “But on game day, like, he looked different on Sunday. He was out there with a mean streak and he played that way, he finished strong.”

With just over three weeks until the start of the regular season, Guyton said he is focused on improving everything.
