2 internal and external options Cowboys should consider after Chuma Edoga’s injury
Despite falling to the Los Angeles Rams in the closing seconds of the game, the Dallas Cowboys enjoyed a mostly successful preseason debut on Sunday. Chuma Edoga’s sad injury is one thing from the clash that can come back to haunt them.
Fortunately, Edoga’s injury isn’t one that will finish the season, but any type of injury similar to the one he suffered to his toe might keep him out of action for a number of regular-season games. Additionally, it might persist into the season if it isn’t given time to heal properly, which would further complicate his availability. The Cowboys’ offensive tackle depth was further hampered by Earl Bostick’s lower leg injury, which made matters more complicated. Bostick will also be absent for a while because he is returning to Dallas for surgery. The Cowboys most likely signed OT Cohl Carson on Wednesday afternoon as a result of this. Despite having little to no actual playing experience in the league, he is another body who should add some competition and depth to the position. The Cowboys have two options for filling defensive needs: they either search inside or enlist outside assistance.
2 internal options they may consider
1. Matt Waletzko – The Cowboys 2022 fifth-round pick is an in-house option right now to replace Chuma Edoga for as long as his injury keeps him sidelined. While it’s true he struggled with injuries of his own and has mainly been a right tackle, he has a shot to potentially earn the swing OT job.
2. Asim Richards – The 2023 fifth-round draft pick is someone Mike McCarthy has already mentioned as someone who will get some work at left tackle behind Tyler Guyton. He is probably the favorite in-house candidate to take over as the swing tackle this year for as long as Chuma Edoga is out with a toe injury.
2 external options they should consider
1. Kelvin Beachum, Arizona Cardinals The 12-year veteran currently finds himself buried on the depth chart in Arizona and could be in jeopardy of even making the final 53-roster. The 35-year-old has experience at both right and left tackle and could be acquired fairly cheaply via trade. His longevity in the league would add some much-needed experience on the Cowboys OL and could be a great swing tackle option in 2024 for Dallas.
2. Larry Borom, Chicago Bears The Bears 2021 fifth-round draft pick out of Missouri is currently buried on the depth chart in Chicago. The 25-year-old has started 23 career games at both RT and LT, which is more than anybody else currently on the Cowboys roster. His youth and starting experience would make him an upgrade in Dallas and could be acquired via trade with nothing more than a 2025 late-round pick.
