Two players to watch in Cowboys’ second preseason game

The Cowboys head to the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday night after losing to the Rams in the closing seconds of their opening preseason game. Here are two players for the Cowboys to watch.

1. RB Deuce Vaughn

When Vaughn’s father, a scouting analyst for the Cowboys, called to inform him that he had been selected by the team in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL selection, he instantly became the heartwarming tale of the selection. Regretfully, in the seven games during the regular season, he managed just 23 carries for 40 yards. Vaughn isn’t the best fit for pass protection at 5-foot-6 and 176 pounds, which may be the reason the team used him as a receiver in OTAs instead of the slot. He did, after all, finish his Kansas State career as a receiver with 1,283 yards and eight touchdowns. Prior to the Rams game last week, Vaughn had to miss multiple practices due to a hamstring ailment, so he could use a solid showing this weekend against the Raiders. Otherwise, running backs like Malik Davis and Nathaniel Peat could easily take his spot on the roster.

Fortunately, Vaughn returned to practice in full pads on Wednesday and should be able to play on Saturday night. If he does, it will be his first game action since getting two carries against the Lions last year in Week 17.

2. C Cooper Beebe

Following most of camp as Brock Hoffman’s backup, Beebe saw action at guard and center against the Rams. Head coach Mike McCarthy says the rookie lineman will soon get additional reps with the starting lineup. McCarthy remarked, “I think what Cooper did is great.” “I felt he played both guard and center with good snaps. In fact, going forward, we will provide Cooper with some opportunities with the first group of individuals. He will therefore begin working there because he deserves the chance and believes he performed well.” Hoffman played 222 snaps in 17 regular-season games the previous year without giving up a sack. In 2024, Beebe was selected by the squad in the third round as a unanimous All-American and two-time Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year while playing all over the offensive line (except center) with Kansas State.

Beebe’s performance at his current role could help the Cowboys offensive line remain strong for many years to come. Tyler Smith, a 23-year-old Pro Bowl left guard, and Tyler Guyton, a first-round pick, seem to have secured the left tackle position. That’s excellent news for a squad that recently saw the free agency of two Pro Bowl lineman, Tyron Smith and Tyler Biadasz.
