Can Trey Lance’s accuracy be improved?

I’ve been wondering if accuracy can really be taught after witnessing Trey Lance’s accuracy problems last Sunday. It was once mentioned by Troy Aikman that accuracy is something you either have or don’t, but I believe Dak Prescott’s accuracy has increased over time. However, he was participating in every game and obtaining all of the reps. How do you feel? Can Lance get better at this even that he just gets a few practice reps and is a backup? – Royce Withers/Arizona City.

Patrik: As someone who has covered the NFL for many years and is a lifelong analytical fan, I believe that accuracy, like almost every aspect of the game, can be improved with repetition and dedication. That being said, I think that, like anything, there are levels to it and that certain ceilings are higher or lower than others. The issue is that we don’t yet know Lance’s ceiling and he won’t have the chance to accumulate thousands of reps in Dallas to find that out. As a result, he will need to make rapid progress in a short amount of time—three preseason games remain—in order to make the necessary progress toward trying to overcome the long odds of replacing Cooper Rush as QB2. I Lance has the skill set to play football at the NFL level, I just don’t have the data yet to determine what that looks like. He’s putting in the work and I’ve seen improvement over this time last year and, honestly, that’s all you can ask and then you evaluate from there. So, no, there’s nothing more he can do than what he’s doing.

Nick Eatman: In my opinion, it can be made better. It all begins, in my opinion, with the game’s mental component. A quarterback’s overall approach should slow down when they can process information more quickly. Players ought should be able to connect on passes more effectively as a result. Pre-snap, in the pocket, and through are all where the domino effect begins. Therefore, I believe that he will become more accurate as he becomes more at ease. He still has a ways to go, though, since what we witnessed the other day was not at all what an NFL quarterback should be. Lance needs to make the most of these more reps at this time, as well as the final two preseason games.
