Rangers suffering reality check with summer business as transfer trend to continue

Rangers must keep selling players before they can make any purchases before the August 30 transfer deadline, according to Dan Plumley’s insistence. Earlier this summer, Philippe Clement revealed that the team will need to trade players in order to make purchases. This was seen firsthand as Conor Goldson was transferred out to make room for Robin Propper. That is probably going to be the case for the club pretty much every summer, according to finance expert Plumley, especially considering how many of their ambitions depend on making it to the European football championship. Tuesday, August 13, is the second leg of the Gers’ third-round qualifying match against Dynamo Kyiv, with the goal of advancing to the Champions League. Plumley, nevertheless, stated that the sell-to-buy model will not disappear.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, he said: “I would suggest so (sell-to-buy will continue) yes.

“Because, as we’re talking right now, Champions League qualification is going to be the swing and, again, that’s kind of the case year to year with Rangers,” the statement reads. The infrastructure of Scottish football is facing challenges, and as it grows, the question of whether to play in the Champions League or Europa League will always remain. Until that decision is made in August, there will probably be some in-and-out movement.

“That’s through no fault of Rangers that’s the reality of where they’re at in their own market also in the wider European market with transfers in and out.”

Rangers in clear need of Champions League boost
Clement and Nils Koppen have been busy at work trying to overhaul the Gers’ squad this summer but, with just over two weeks remaining, there are still pieces they will want to work on.

The issue, as Plumley rightly points out, is that there isn’t just a blank chequebook to play with at Ibrox and ultimately if they want to bring more faces in some will inevitably have to move out.

However, winning the Champions League would undoubtedly increase their prospects of acquiring new players, and expanding the competition would be much more beneficial. However, even if that does occur, we’ll probably be back here in a year since the Gers would use player sales to finance any signings. That’s just the way things are at the moment.
