Will Trey Lance make the Dallas Cowboys 53-man roster?
On Sunday, Trey Lance made his eagerly awaited Dallas Cowboys debut against the Los Angeles Rams. The third overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft was the center of attention as he tried to establish his readiness as a starter. Regretfully, Lance didn’t perform well in the first preseason game. His athleticism was on show in a few instances, such as a 19-yard run, but he was unimpressive overall. Lance completed 25 of 41 passes for 188 yards, a mere 4.6 yards per pass attempt. He departed the game early, missing a fourth-down play near the end zone that may have resulted in a touchdown pass to Jalen Cropper.
Heading into the game, there were still whispers he could be the future starter if Dak Prescott didn’t sign with Dallas long-term. Now, there’s no guarantee he makes the 53-man roster.Lance didn’t appear to be a former first-round pick facing reserves in his fourth season of football when playing against the Rams. Rather, his performance was more akin to that of a rookie quarterback getting his feet wet.
That alone would make it difficult for him to earn a spot on at 53-man roster but it’s even more questionable in Dallas with the presence of Cooper Rush.
The Dallas backup right now was fluid and at ease during his brief Sunday appearance. Given that he has previously completed tasks at the greatest level, this is not surprising. The fact that the Cowboys have Rush as a reliable backup implies they will entertain trade proposals for Lance. When they decide who makes the roster before Week 1.
