According to Gary O’Neil, one Wolves player “should be playing for a top, top club.”

There are now several really gifted players on Wolves’ roster, and according to Gary O’Neil, one of them “should” be playing for a “top, top club.” Supporters of the Wolves are highly optimistic about the upcoming campaign.

Despite the losses of Pedro Neto and Max Kilman, Wolves’ team is thought to be at its strongest point in a while. With European football being the goal, supporters are hoping that Gary O’Neil’s many better players from the previous season can continue to grow in 2024–2025. A man the management has a strong fondness for, Matheus Cunha, will undoubtedly be crucial in any push for Europe.

Recently, O’Neil talked about the Brazilian, and if it wasn’t already obvious how talented he believes him to be, it is now.

Wolves star Matheus Cunha “should be playing for a top, top club,” according to O’Neil.

Cunha joined Wolves midway through the 2022/23 season on the watch of Julen Lopetegui.

Cunha was signed by Wolves at a hefty fee—£44 million, to be exact. He became the club’s record signing as a result, and there was expectation that he would perform.

In addition to having trouble at first adjusting to English football, Lopetegui also appeared unable to pinpoint his ideal position.

However, Cunha flourished under O’Neil’s tutelage last season, receiving consistent plaudits from the coach.

Adam Crafton of The Athletic recently had an interview with O’Neil in Florida after granting the reporter access to the team’s preseason tour of the United States.

Speaking about Cunha, who has a slim chance of making a comeback to play against Arsenal this weekend, O’Neil expressed his strong belief that the player is capable of playing for a major league team.

O’Neil acknowledged, “I’m trying to maximize what he is, because talent-wise and physically, he should be playing for a top, top club,” without disparaging Wolves in any way.

Though we all understand what I mean, let me clarify that Wolves isn’t. “In the beginning of our relationship, I tried to mold him into the person I wanted him to be.

Although it’s excellent that he’s pressing harder and standing where I ask him to, we won’t be able to make the most of him in that way. Anybody could do that with my help.

So I realized that maybe you lose what he really is when you push him too far in this direction. His need to contribute to the team while maintaining his unique brilliance is becoming a frequent topic of discussion.

O’Neil is right, Cunha is a serious talent

O’Neil is right about Cunha and Wolves are lucky to have a player like this.

He is extremely unique with his amazing ball-carrying ability, and works really effectively playing off a main striker. He is also now much better in front of goal than when he first arrived at Molineux.

£60,000-a-week star Cunha could very well play for an elite club in Europe, and it is actually a little surprising he hasn’t had more speculation than he has.

It has only really been suggested so far that Manchester United are admirers of the Brazilian.

But should he have a similar season to what he did in 2023/24, then clubs will surely be flocking to sign him. Hopefully though, Wolves can keep hold of him for as long as possible.
