Brendan Rodgers acknowledges that Celtic won’t be able to replace Matt O’Riley and outlines where “big money” won’t be spent in his absence.

Matt O’Riley can only be replaced by one player at Celtic, according to Brendan Rodgers, and even then, they wouldn’t have to think about letting him go.

Southampton and Brighton are also eager to try and acquire the Danish international, and Atalanta reportedly made a fourth bid for him.

Breaking the Hoops’ resistance will require a club record offer, which Rodgers acknowledges won’t be used in full on a single player in the event that Parkhead’s coffers are flooded with cash. And if they succeeded, they wouldn’t need to think about selling O’Riley in the first place.

After a 2-0 victory at Hibs, he said to BBC Scotland, “I don’t think we can replace like for like.” “It would be extremely tough to replace him right away because he has spent years developing into the player he is now.

Because of this, if he were to go, it would be on a very large scale, and we wouldn’t spend that much money on a single player. If not, he wouldn’t be lost.

I’m not overanalyzing it, though. I truly enjoy working with this player because he is incredibly gifted and talented. He is having a great time at Celtic, and we’ll see how things develop day by day.

However, as long as he’s here, the focus will be on developing him and his skills. As you can see from today’s game, he has a first-rate attitude and is aware of my complete trust in him.

“At least, I wasn’t up until this morning; I’m not aware of any fresh bids. He’s playing and training really well, so we just keep going in that direction unless I hear differently.”

Although Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to sign a new striker, he refused to accept the offer to go for Adam Idah, the season’s loan star. In light of Celtic drafting a new offer, the Norwich forward was benched for the Canaries’ opening-day loss at Oxford United on Saturday.

Rodgers, though, followed the plan exactly: “The message is the same. Hopefully, in the three weeks we have left, we can make the improvements we know we need to.” When questioned about whether it would occur this week, Rodgers said, “I’m not sure. I am not sure.

I won’t get into too much detail about other teams’ players because, well, I have to respect the fact that Adam plays for Norwich. “He started for Norwich yesterday, but my main concern right now is getting the team ready. They’re playing really well, and we’re off to a great start with two victories out of two.”
