Rangers will add a striker to play ahead of Cyriel Dessers, therefore he won’t have the opportunity to score more than 20 goals this season, according to Tam McManus.
After fellow commentator Alan Rough asserted that Nigerian international Will Schofield would again reach that milestone for the Light Blues this season—having registered 22 in all competitions previous term—the former Hibs attacker commented on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show on August 5.
In August’s opening game, a 0-0 stalemate against Hearts, Dessers led the line for Philippe Clement and came the closest to scoring for the Gers with a header that deflected onto the goal frame.
A new senior forward, maybe to replace number two Lawrence Shankland [Daily Record, 2 August], has been rumored to be joining the team over the summer, and McManus thinks someone will join before the deadline.
Hearts and the Rangers ace Lawrence Shankland draw blanks Dessers created three wonderful chances at Tyncastle with excellent touch and location, so it was maybe unfortunate that he was not the game-winner. However, his luck and finishing were not as impressive.
It is generally safe to assume that the 29-year-old will surpass the 20 goal mark if he continues to be Clement’s primary option. The player has demonstrated his ability to score goals as a consistent starter.
However, there seems to be interest in signing a new number one who can strike the net more frequently despite connections to Albion Rrahmani and Shankland.
If Danilo can stay healthy this season, he could be an upgrade, but the decision won’t be made until after he returns to full strength, which Derek Ferguson of Ibrox News predicts could take a few weeks.
Dessers may have to go in order to make room for the incoming arrival, and he is thought to have a long list of suitors [Rangers Review, 3 July].
It is one of many questions that remain unanswered so late in the transfer window after the season began, with only one new signing in the starting lineup and half of the transfer business completed. However, it may turn out to be one of the most significant.
