The preseason experiment that might not be good for Boubacar Traore of Wolves

The only member of the first team who is not in the squad right now is Boubacar Traore, and something Gary O’Neil has been doing in the preseason may not be the best for the midfield player.

Traore has been representing Mali in the Olympics. The 22-year-old has not played in a significant amount of minutes for Wolves previous season, but the Games have given him the chance to gain some experience.

Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes were Traore’s superiors, with Tommy Doyle frequently being O’Neil’s next pick. Throughout all tournaments, Traore made 27 appearances.

but for a mere 997 minutes during play. In 2023–2024, he hopes to build on those minutes. However, it’s plausible that Molineux is suddenly offering him even more competition.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde might provide Boubacar Traore with fresh competition at Wolves.

Traore hasn’t played much since joining Wolves two years ago—he was originally loaned by FC Metz. He was ahead of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in his debut season, but Lemina and Gomes joined midway through 2022–2023.

Doyle joined last summer from Manchester City and appears to be a genuine player. He already having a difficult time. Additionally, Gary O’Neil has been employing Jean-Ricner Bellegarde in a deeper role during preseason games while he has been absent.

After joining the team from Strasbourg, the Frenchman had a somewhat forgettable debut season at Molineux. O’Neill, though, has shown promise and confidence in his skills, and in the past few weeks, the celebrity has made an impression.

He did a superb job of using his ball-carrying ability when he played in a deeper role alongside Tommy Doyle against West Ham United. He made another impression yesterday night as he played a similar position against RB Leipzig.

This may have been the last thing Traore needed in his attempt to get more playing time, given his typical position is in deeper midfield zones.

Traore loan would be no surprise

Traore – who cost Wolves £9.5 million – is a player with great potential, and we have seen glimpses of his talent in a Wolves shirt over the last two years. He finished last season quite well in comparison to a lot of his teammates.

But with Wolves’ midfield spots so competitive right now, O’Neil appears to have a new option for those deeper slots in Bellegarde.

The star may, of course, play farther forward. However, he may have provided the management with some food for thought.

If O’Neil determines it would be best to move away, Traore may be a possible destination. RC Lens has expressed interest in the player this summer.
