Rangers’ choice to honor manager left Neil McCann “very surprised.”

Less than a year after Philippe Clement’s Ibrox stint began, Neil McCann was taken aback when Rangers revealed that Clement had received a contract extension through the summer of 2028.

Rangers’ aspirations for the 2023–24 season unraveled, despite Clement leading the team to the League Cup previous season and seeing them give up on the Scottish Premiership title fight and lose to archrivals Celtic in the Scottish Cup final. The manager of Rangers has previously advised fans to have patience and trust the process, even though the team does need a major overhaul. Nevertheless, McCann does not know where the Rangers board would stop if they were to lag behind Celtic this year.

The scoreless draw with Heart of Midlothian today demonstrated the magnitude of the task facing the Belgian.

While serving as a commentator on Sky Sports, McCann stated, “The new contract demonstrates Clement’s commitment.” Given that Philippe hasn’t yet completed his first year here, I was shocked to learn of his contract signing. “He won the League Cup the previous season, and he performed an excellent job for the most of his term, but toward the conclusion of the season, things started to go south. The season’s most significant conclusion, if I may say so.

He mentioned rebuilding, but that will take time—do you have time in Glasgow? I must admit that Steven Gerrard did, so perhaps that’s the kind of business plan they’re considering. “They’re talking about player trading models and things like that, but in the Rangers, you have to succeed right away, so it’s not easy.”
