Ally McCoist blasts Rangers as he reacts to latest transfer news at Ibrox
While acknowledging that he has been impressed by what he has seen from Celtic, the Old Firm opponents, Ally McCoist has criticized Rangers’ preseason performance. The Gers have lost against Ajax, Manchester United, and Birmingham City and drawn with Standard Liege and Union Berlin since winning their first preseason friendly against Hamilton Academical on July 6. Despite his dissatisfaction with Philippe Clement’s team, McCoist acknowledges that his old team has undergone significant change this summer, with Robin Propper becoming the ninth player to join during the transfer window on Thursday, August 1. As reported by the Daily Record, McCoist stated on talkSPORT on Friday, August 2, that “the big two have had contrasting pre-seasons, shall we say.” To be honest, Celtic has produced some incredible preseason results.
Rangers have frankly been pretty poor, although it was a good game against Union Berlin. Defensively they were all over the place but looked very good in attack.
“It’s a very difficult one, it’s a bit of a mixed bag at Rangers. There has been a few ones going out the door and he has brought a few in – the big centre-back from FC Twente Propper, Liam Kelly, Jefte, Connor Barron, and Mohamed Diomande has signed a permanent deal and the boy Cerny has signed as well.
“There is about six or seven new faces that have come in, but a bit of experience going out of the door as well. So, it’s difficult to predict but I would be hopeful that the performances will be better than what we have seen in pre-season.”
Rangers have it all to do to beat Celtic in Scottish Premiership title race
Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen deserve a lot of credit for their work since the end of last season because they’ve actually followed through on wanting a rebuild at Ibrox.
Over the past five years, the word “rebuild” has been bandied around a lot, but nobody has really carried it out—at least not to a high enough standard. However, long-serving Govan players like Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, Kemar Roofe, John Lundstram, and Connor Goldson have all bid goodbye to Clement and Koppen.
Links also seem to indicate that they will not be the only senior players departing; if they do, John Souttar will be the Rangers’ longest-serving player, followed by James Tavernier, Ianis Hagi, Todd Cantwell, and Scott Wright (Chris Jack). Nine additional players have been added, the most recent being Propper, a 30-year-old Dutch defender from FC Twente who might take Goldson’s place.
