Cowboys Line Up DE Workouts

The Cowboys, who are in need of depth along the edge, have arranged four workouts for veterans who are still available. As reported by Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Carl Lawson, Shaka Toney, Al-Quadin Muhammad, and Justin Hollins are scheduled to make visits to Dallas today. Sam Williams will be unavailable for the 2024 campaign due to an ACL rupture. Although Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence are still capable of handling a demanding workload, Williams’ absence deprives the squad of crucial depth. Following his injury, the Cowboys began to assess the free-agent possibilities still available.101

Upon joining the Jets in 2021, Lawson was expected to perform well, but an Achilles tear postponed his season opener in New York by one year. After getting well, he was able to record seven sacks; nevertheless, he played in just 101 defensive snaps the previous season and had little statistical impact. This summer, the 29-year-old has visited the Dolphins and Panthers, and he plans to make a deal during his visit to Dallas. Toney spent his first two seasons in Washington as a seventh-round pick of the Commanders, largely playing on special teams. The 26-year-old missed the previous season of the NFL due to a gambling suspension, but he was allowed to return in April.

His Commander promptly released him after that, allowing him to sign with any team that was interested. Toney has not been seen since May, and this is his first known visit. Muhammad did not participate in any regular season games the previous season despite having played in 84 games with 34 starts. Late in the 2023 season, he was given a six-game PED punishment, which included the first week of the next season because the Colts were not able to make the playoffs. Muhammad was a full-time starter for Indianapolis the year before and had six sacks in his one-year Bears stint in 2022, albeit he did not have much of an impact.

Throughout his career, Hollins, 28, has played for five different teams. While playing for the Packers and Rams in 2022, he had his best productive season (3.5 sacks, four tackles for loss). In 2023, Hollins played mostly on special teams and made at least one appearance with three different teams. In Dallas, he would probably land a third phase role. With little more than $12 million in cap space as of Thursday, the Cowboys have enough room to add someone along the edge at a reasonable cost. Those four players will all likely be available on team-friendly contracts, and Dallas’ choice at the position will be influenced by their performance today.
