The Buffalo Bills are adding some seasoned personnel to assist with their injured secondary. On July 31, the Bills announced that they had signed safety Terrell Burgess to a one-year contract.
Cole Bishop, a rookie safety, had been forced out of practice the day before due to an undisclosed ailment. Mike Edwards, a safety, was already lost by the Bills to an injury that might sideline him for weeks.
After All-Pros Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer left the position, the safety position was already in turmoil; the injuries might add to the uncertainty in the weeks leading up to the start of the regular season.
Laws Incorporating Additional Support With the Los Angeles Rams, Burgess was selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft and went on to win a Super Bowl while playing for them. He played for the Washington Commanders in 12 games last season and also spent time with the New York Giants.
His signing was the second addition to the safety room for the Bills this week. They also signed 15-year veteran Kareem Jackson to a one-year deal shortly after announcing that Edwards was out on a week-to-week basis due to his hamstring injury.
Jackson started 193 of his 203 NFL regular season games and eight postseason games, as the organization pointed out. In his 954 career tackles, he has racked up 22 interceptions, three of which he has returned for touchdowns.
Jackson had a challenging season in 2023 after serving two suspensions totaling six games for flagrantly breaking unnecessary roughness guidelines.
The signings could signal that Hyde will not return to the Bills after rumblings that he could play one final season.
Hyde said that he was wavering between a return to Buffalo or retirement, and Bills general manager Brandon Beane was open earlier this offseason to the veteran safety coming back for a final NFL season.

Uncertainty in Mike Edwards’ Future After missing several offseason sessions due to a nagging shoulder issue, Edwards’ Bills career was already off to a poor start.
Although Edwards was expected to start, as Nick Wojton of USA Today’s Bills Wire pointed out, he was not part of the first-team defense when training camp began because of a shoulder issue.
The organization intended to progress Edwards gradually, according to Bills head coach Sean McDermott, but the most recent injury casts doubt on where he will rank on the depth chart.
It’s a part of the game, on one hand,” McDermott said via video conference. “The other part is, in order to get the scheme down the way you need to get it down, you need to be out there.
But Mike’s a pro, he’s been around it before, so I’m sure he’ll do his best to stay up as best as he can on the mental end of things.”
