Newcastle United have been given the green light to revisit a move for Liverpool and England defender Joe Gomez this summer.
The Magpies are known to be in the market for a centre-half this summer and Gomez is open to leaving Anfield this summer.
It could lead to Newcastle revisiting a £45million move for the 27-year-old they reportedly were close to sealing last month amid the Anthony Gordon PSR saga.
Last month, the Reds were offered the chance to sign Gordon but ChronicleLive understands Liverpool were approached with a proposal that was not right for the club.
The Daily Mail reported that the proposed deal included defender Jarell Quansah, who Liverpool do not want to lose, and this was confirmed.
However, according to a new report in Mail Online, Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales returned with a second proposal to buy Gomez instead for £45m and sell Gordon to Liverpool for £75m in return.
The report claims both England players were ready to do medicals in Leipzig during the European Championships in Germany but the move collapsed when Newcastle managed to sell Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest to ease their PSR woes.
But now it is claimed Gomez is open to leaving Anfield this summer and Liverpool could buy a defender to replace him should he leave the club.
Liverpool have Virgil van Dijk, Quansah, Ibrahima Konate and youngster Sepp van den Berg, who has impressed in pre-season, as central defensive options alongside Gomez and it is claimed the prospect of regular first team football in his favoured position has appealed to him.
Gomez was used at full-back at times last season and although his versatility is appreciated, his form at centre-half during the 2019/20 season helped Liverpool win an historic Premier League title.
Newcastle are in the market for another centre-half with both Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman set to miss a large chunk of the opening months of the season through injury.
Emil Krafth and Dan Burn, who Howe has largely used as full-backs, have started most of Newcastle’s pre-season games at centre-half, with Fabian Schar only just returning to the fold after this summer’s European Championships.
New signing Lloyd Kelly is building up his fitness, too, and, as such, a new centre-half, alongside a new right-winger, has become Newcastle’s transfer priority.
AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park but a move for Gomez could be a deal that suits all parties.
