The Anfield supporters are growing impatient as the Reds have not yet participated in the summer transfer window and there are less than three weeks till the new season begins.
Arne Slot is apparently deliberating about his first signing as Reds manager, and Liverpool has reportedly initiated transfer talks over three positions. Since the end of the previous season, the team has failed to sign a single player for the first team, and some Anfield supporters are starting to get nervous. This is especially true considering that midfielder Thiago Alcantara and defender Joel Matip have not found replacements.
With Liverpool determined to contend for another Premier League title this year, Slot has previously stated that he is content to work with the options at his disposal for the time being. However, there is a growing sense that he is prepared to add reinforcements to his team.
Despite the arrival of a new manager who is anticipated to instill his authority in the team’s performance through several new hires, the Reds’ abundance of youth and skill in the squad meant that this summer was never going to be frantic.
But as the summer transfer season nears its last month of opening, it seems Liverpool has looked at three places for additions. The Athletic claims that in addition to a center-back, talks have also been had regarding a holding midfielder and an offensive wide winger.
Liverpool is determined to replace Matip, even if they also have Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate, and last season’s breakout talent Jarell Quansah in their defensive ranks. Konate, Gomez, and Quansah are good back-row alternatives, but the Reds want a left-sided center-half partner for club captain Van Dijk that they can commit to for the long run. Despite the midfield renovation last summer that included the arrivals of Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, and Dominik Szoboszlai on Merseyside, a holding midfielder is also very much on the priority list. Although the first two are more attack-oriented players, they outperformed expectations in their rookie seasons.
However, Endo and Gravenberch fell short of the same expectations, and Slot is rumored to be seeking a new number six. The team, however, turned down a recent offer for Endo from Marseille because it feels there aren’t many acceptable, reasonably priced, and readily available alternatives on the market.
Finally, an attacking wide player is preferable, although not quite as much as the other two positions. Along with star player Mohamed Salah, Liverpool currently has Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo as its wide options, with Diogo Jota can also fill in if need be.
But a fresh injection of talent could be the difference between Liverpool winning a major trophy and coming away with nothing this season, while a long-term replacement is also wanted for Salah, who is now 32-years-old and attracting interest from Saudi Arabia.
