Williams suffered an ACL and MCL tear in his left knee during Sunday’s special teams practice, according to the team.
During Sunday’s special teams practice, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams tore ligaments in his left knee, necessitating season-ending surgery.
The team confirmed that Williams tore the ACL and the MCL.
Williams was hurt while the Cowboys were still practicing blocking without pads. After receiving care from trainers for a few minutes, he was carried off the pitch in a motorized cart without putting any weight on his leg.
Due to the departures of outside linebacker Dante Fowler and defensive end Dorance Armstrong in free agency throughout the offseason, it was anticipated that the 6-foot-4, 261-pound Williams would play a larger role as an edge rusher this season.
Williams, a 2022 second-round draft selection out of Mississippi, participated in 32 regular-season games over the previous two years, playing in all 17 of them the previous year. His career total is 8 1/2 sacks.
