Dak Prescott Predicted to Bolt Cowboys for $224 Million Contract
The story between the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott is still ongoing. With Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa, two NFL quarterbacks, signing big contracts, the heat is on the Cowboys to convince Prescott to sign a new deal. But because of a no-franchise tag rule, Prescott also owns a lot of the cards, making it a peculiar position. Additionally, Prescott has a no-trade clause that would prohibit Dallas from dealing with the quarterback absent the star’s approval.
Because of all of this, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report believes that Prescott will leave Dallas when free agency opens in 2025. Prescott should get a four-year, $224 million contract from another team in the upcoming offseason, according to Knox. In an article published on July 26, 2024, under the headline “Projecting Dak Prescott, Brock Purdy Contracts After Tua Tagovailoa Deal,” Knox said, “By waiting, the Cowboys have allowed Prescott to watch as [Jared] Goff and [Trevor] Lawrence signed their extension.” “Tagovailoa’s contract is now finalized as well. Prescott is going to need at least $53.2 million a year, even if he is not trying to lead the market.
“Prescott is likely to get that, and possibly not from Dallas. His contract includes a no-tag and no-trade clause, meaning he can simply play on a $55.1 million cap hit this season and hit free agency in 2025,” Knox continued.
“…It’s starting to feel like a split between Dallas and Prescott is inevitable. The questions is which quarterback-needy team will pony up for the three-time Pro Bowler in 2025.”
Though Prescott has control over his future, the Cowboys are receiving a lot of flak for not reaching a deal with him. Prescott has made hints that a possible transaction is being thwarted by more than just the front office. Could Prescott prefer to wait to sign a new contract until after the 2024 season? Before deciding where he wants to play on his next contract, Prescott might also want to take advantage of NFL free agency.
