Cowboys training camp debacle shows 49ers dodged a major bullet

Recently, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance worked out for the Dallas Cowboys during training camp. It did not go smoothly. Lance’s subpar play makes it seem very likely that the Niners were lucky to avoid losing the former No. 3 overall pick. With now-Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance, the 49ers avoided a serious blow. You can watch the video of Lance’s awful performance that gained some attention on social media here. In the video, Lance makes three really poor throws, the third of which is tipped and ends in a pick-six.

Of course, these are just three throws from practice. It is possible that Lance did well the rest of practice, and that these three throws were his worst of the day cherry picked to make him look bad.

However, these mistakes are consistent with the ones he made during his time in San Francisco. It just seemed like Lance would struggle with reading defenses sometimes and would not be able to make simple throws. It was for that reason why he was unable to beat out then-49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for a job in 2021, and for that same reason why he was deemed not good enough to be Brock Purdy’s backup last season.

Lance is still only 24 years old. He has plenty of time to improve and turn things around. The question is where is he going to get playing time? He is currently third on the depth chart in Dallas, and starting QB Dak Prescott does not look like he is going anywhere soon. Perhaps if Lance shows promise in preseason action, he will get traded to a team in need of a backup or maybe even a starter if a quarterback gets injured.
