Wolves ready to battle Brentford for transfer target Jake O’Brien
As the Wolves boss eyes potential reinforcements to integrate into central defence, Olympique Lyon centre-back Jake O’Brien has emerged as a possible target.
FootMercato have reported that the Irishman will almost certainly leave Lyon this summer, explaining that the 23-year-old has generated interest from the Premier League.
The news was then relayed by Sport Witness, who added that Wolves and Brentford could ‘tussle’ for the defender this summer, with Everton also in the picture.
While the report focuses on Brentford having made contact in an attempt to sign the former Crystal Palace youngster, Wolves are credited to be in with a chance at luring O’Brien to Molineux.
O’Brien would be the perfect addition to Gary O’Neil’s squad
While Wolves’ opening work in the transfer window has been bright, the Old Gold’s focus has been very much on the attack.
18-year-old Pedro Lima represents the only defensive signing so far, with links to O’Brien coming at an interesting time following Kilman’s departure.
Standing at 6 foot 6, it’s clear to see why O’Neil would want to add a defender of the Ireland international’s stature to his back line, particularly as Wolves’ defence is lacking depth.
Following Kilman’s exit, only Santi Bueno, Craig Dawson, Toti Gomes and Yerson Mosquera remain as O’Neil’s centre-back options, reinforcing why O’Brien would be a strong capture.
The Ligue 1 ace was lauded as a “revelation” in France by journalist Zach Lowy, who admitted he wouldn’t be surprised if an English club signed him this summer.
Being only 23, there is plenty of room for the Irishman to develop his game, just as Wolves allowed Kilman to do during his early days at the club.
With limited options in defence ahead of the upcoming season, O’Neil must strike fast with intent in the race for O’Brien, who would be the perfect figure for the manager to welcome to Molineux.
