Jermain Defoe says he’s ready for first team management after starting his badges at Rangers, and leaving Tottenham.
The ex-striker who counts both clubs, West Ham, Sunderland and more amongst his previous clubs is embarking upon a coaching journey. Starting his B-licence at Rangers proved a learning curve before finishing his badges with Spurs, who he worked with as a youth coach.
Defoe has since left the Premier League team and given Sky Sports an explanation of his future goals. The former star of West Ham and Sunderland expressed gratitude to Spurs and Rangers for giving him a starting platform and insisted that he wanted a chance to be a leading man. “I knew that opportunity at Tottenham was waiting for me when I was at Rangers and I finished there, so I was grateful for that,” he stated.
“I was only using it to finish my badges because I wanted to finish my B-licence at Tottenham, which I started at Rangers. I was just happy to have had the chance. Just at this particular moment, I feel like I am prepared for a first-team setting. “I attended the academy for two years, and it was excellent. There were some outstanding young players.” Some amazing trainers I worked with were Wayne Burnett, Nigel Gibbs, Paul Bracewell, and Bradley Allen. It was beneficial for me to have that exposure, but I think I am ready for a first-team setting at this point.
“I think when you have gone to an experienced place like Tottenham and worked with some experienced coaches like I’ve just mentioned, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do anyway. At the back end of my career I always wanted to go into management and do my badges and see where it takes me.
“In the end, I believe you just need to consider everything.” Being the best has always been my goal; it is kind of the main goal. I guess in football, you never know what is going to happen next. That being said, if there was a chance to work as an assistant somewhere in order to gain some experience and further my coaching career, then so be it. My major objective, I believe, is to rise to the top and land a managerial position.
“With football, you never know.” Depending on the circumstance. Everybody’s journey is unique, therefore when you talk about levels, I mean that. Of course, Steven Gerrard managed me while I was a player at Rangers. When I chatted with Stevie about his path, he was coaching Liverpool’s under-18 team before being given the chance to join Rangers. Of course, it needs to be the proper setting and club for me.
