Philippe Clement could leave Rangers for Belgium job amid clashes with exit-linked Todd Cantwell

Keith Jackson has indicated that Philippe Clement may quit the Rangers without ever having to answer for the shortcomings of his team. On July 22, a journalist for the Daily Record reported on the paper’s website that the Ibrox manager had been the target of rumors regarding his employment in Belgium and that there was increasing concern about the team’s “decline” and his potential departure. Jackson chastised Clement for lacking a clear style of play and for not making the most of Todd Cantwell, his “most talented attacking player.” Cantwell is regarded as having no difficulty because they appear to have some kind of “problem” and the Englishman’s play has declined since the manager took over, with the two “constantly at loggerheads since the start.”

Todd Cantwell out in the cold at Rangers since Michael Beale exit

Both Cantwell and Clement had significant impacts on flagging Light Blues seasons when they arrived but it is looking like the influence of each has since wained. At this stage most observers would expect, and probably prefer, the former Norwich midfielder to be sold so the Belgian boss can reinvest the fees in some of his own signings.

Clement can’t escape criticism for the fact that having done the hard work of reviving the campaign last term he saw the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup squandered while failing to get a single win over Celtic.

At the same time he can justifiably point to the fact he was picking up the pieces from Michael Beale’s failed transfer rebuild and was endlessly plagued by what Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson termed “disturbing” injury issues.

Even now, the hierarchy has forced him to deal with the Ibrox issue, and he has seen his own transfer window impeded by having to sell in order to buy [Rangers Review, July 13]. Even though Cantwell looked like the outstanding player last season and the two of them collaborated for the lone Old Firm victory in two years—albeit in a dead dubber—Beale left with little positive points remained. While it didn’t happen between the midfield player and Beale, it appears that personalities clash between the Englishman and Clement. Nevertheless, not many supporters would want to see the latter’s persona come back.
