John Souttar reacts as James Tavernier linked with Rangers exit

John Souttar, a center back for Rangers, has commented on rumors that captain James Tavernier may be leaving Ibrox this summer. The Scotland international stated that the team isn’t in the least bit distracted by the growing speculation that the seasoned right-back for the Gers may be leaving this summer. According to reports, Philippe Clement is eager to transfer his captain to Trabzonspor if the correct price is offered, and Trabzonspor, a Turkish team, made a proposal for Tavernier this summer [Sky Sports, July 19]. In response to the reports, Souttar told the Daily Record on July 21 that “I don’t think it’s a disruption at all.”It is included in football. Every transfer window at a team like this will involve individuals connected to moving and with different things.

“I think that’s just one of the things being part of Rangers. It’s going to happen and it’s important the boys concentrate on playing football and training every day. Anything else will take care of itself.”

James Tavernier transfer away from Rangers looks likely
Clement’s reshaping of the Gers squad this summer began at a rapid pace, with six new signings through the door and five out-of-favour players jettisoned before the first week in July was up.

However, that progress has slowed since with Hamza Igamane the most recent signing, but shifting someone like Tavernier – and his sizeable wages – off the books could kick-start business once again.

Dujon Sterling appears to be the Gers’ ready-made right-back successor for the 31-year-old, if his preseason performance against Manchester United is any indication. Given that Clement has stated that everyone save goalkeeper Jack Butland may be available for purchase this summer, it would make sense for him to collect a transfer fee for a full-back who is over 30 [Rangers Review, July 14]. Jefte and Clinton Nsiala are Souttar’s two new defensive teammates that he must get used to, but with change being the main theme of this summer’s transfer window, Clement will be hoping that the Scotsman can perform well no matter who plays alongside him.
