Liverpool has some significant transfer and contract decisions to make this summer.
New sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot are active behind the scenes.Although Liverpool has not yet added a new player this summer, work is still being done behind the scenes to decide what would be the best course of action.
There are some important decisions for head coach Arne Slot and new sporting director Richard Hughes to make. In addition to adding more players to the roster in time for the upcoming season, Liverpool needs to decide which players to let go, either permanently or temporarily.
Furthermore, choosing who remains put or goes out to receive regular playing experience could be crucial given the abundance of bright young players emerging.
Some of the important decisions that must be made are simpler than others. Slot has been eager to go through his roster, but some of his players are currently out due to injury, and others are still on vacation. There are a few moving parts, that much is certain.
Many teams are interested in signing Bobby Clark on a loan, but he has not yet recovered from the injury that held him out of the last few weeks of the season. Red Bull Salzburg is among options, and there’s a case to be made for allowing him to play someplace each week.
Clark is one of a handful of exceptional young Liverpool players who are just outside of the first team’s rotation yet are too good to be playing U21 soccer every week. Kaide Gordon and Ben Doak, the young wingers, are in the same boat.
Doak missed Euro 2024 with Scotland because to an injury that kept him out of action for the second half of the previous season. However, he is back in full training and made 45 minutes against Preston North End on Friday.
While Gordon is still someone to keep an eye on, he finished the previous season strongly after missing 19 months due to injury.
Luke Chambers may also go out for extra experience. He played for Liverpool in the Europa League group stages before going on loan to Wigan Athletic.
The left-footed defender from England’s youth team is highly respected, but those ahead of him in the hierarchy may prevent him from playing more minutes at the senior level.
Liverpool may sell players like Nat Phillips, Billy Koumetio, and Rhys Williams this summer. None of them have a long-term future at Anfield, and Sepp van den Berg, another center back, has already stated that he needs a minute guarantee.
The Reds estimate his worth at $26 million (£20 million/€24 million), though no one has yet expressed a desire to pay that kind of money.
Liverpool is hoping to persuade Caoimhin Kelleher to stay. The Irish goalkeeper would come with a high price tag if he were to push for a move in order to get more playing time, but it would be extremely difficult to find a capable substitute who would acknowledge Alisson Becker as the clear.
While Fabio Carvalho has returned from a loan with Hull City, Tyler Morton is attracting interest from a number of European clubs, notably RB Leipzig.
The latter must decide if a permanent departure would be a better course of action for his career or if he has a realistic chance of playing regularly at Liverpool when he turns 22 next month. Of course, there’s always the chance for another loan.
