Trabzonspor breaks the quiet around James Tavernier’s transfer out of the Rangers, but there’s a catch to this “plan B” promise.
A new right-back is on the way, according to Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan, despite Rangers captain James Tavernier being a target. But the captain might have to wait for a reunion in Turkey with Borna Barisic and John Lundstram, the former Ibrox colleagues, since another target is scheduled to arrive at Papara Park in Tavernier’s place PRIOR to the Englishman. According to reports, Rangers and Trabzonspor are trying to work out a deal over the 32-year-old’s contract; there are rumors in Turkey that a two-year deal has already been approved.
Prior to starting his summer recruitment drive in preparation for the upcoming Scottish Premiership season and Champions League qualifications, manager Philippe Clement has been upfront about the fact that he will need to sell players. And following the unexpected departure of Belgian international Thomas Meunier, top dogan has had to rebuild similarly.
Meunier is set to join Lille on a free transfer after cutting his contract short after just six-months at the club. And speaking to Turkish media, Dogan promised a quick-fire replacement. Reports suggest it will be 23-year-old Boavista star Pedro Malheiro who is incoming. However, chairman Dogan assured fans that the business would not stop there amid interest in Tavernier.
“After Meunier’s departure, we had our plan B ready and we acted right away,” he stated. In a day or two, our new right-back will be here. Our only goal is to build a team that battles, stands tall on the field, and delights the spectators. Our supporters don’t need to be concerned. Trabzonspor will contend with the best. “Trabzonspor will finish the right-back move today or tomorrow. Five or six additional transfers are what we have planned. In the next two to three days, we want to finish two or three of them.”
