Based on one observation made during the preseason by Wolves, Gary O’Neil might have just discovered his ideal player.

As Wolves begin their pre-season training, Gary O’Neil may have struck gold with one signing this summer. In contrast to the bad points of the 2023 window, Wolves’ summer has been going well thus far.

A few crucial players were shipped out to make money last year, which sent the team into mass exile and resulted in Julen Lopetegui’s quick departure a few days before the 2023–24 season.

Three new faces have entered the market thanks to Gary O’Neil’s manipulation: Rodrigo Gomes, Jorgen Strand Larsen, and Pedro Lima.

Liam Keen suggests that Rodrigo Gomes would be ideal for Wolves in light of positive preseason results.

The manager had his first chance to evaluate his new additions during Wolves’ preseason training camp in Marbella, where the Old Gold practiced as a team and played a friendly against Como. Journalist Liam Keen from Express and Star was in Marbella, and he provided some fascinating early insight into the potential of Gomes, who signed for a little under £13 million from Braga.

In an interview with the E&S Wolves Podcast, Keen discussed his time spent with the team in Marbella and revealed details about Gomes that suggest he would be the ideal addition for O’Neil.

“He’s been playing on the left side rather than on the right, he played a lot on the right last season, he is right-footed, O’Neil likes inverted wide players.

He’s been playing out on the left, cutting in on that right foot. Not only is he cutting in and linking up well with the defender behind him, or Cunha playing as a 10, he’s also willing to take a player on.

“He was getting to the byline, whipping crosses in, comfortable on his left foot as well as his right, he’s quick, he’s direct, he’s tricky, eye for a cross and a goal, I think he’s going to be a really good player. He suits what Wolves want to do.”

The 21-year-old’s versatility could be something that will come of use to O’Neil, being capable of playing on either flank and as a fullback, with Keen emphasising the areas of the youngster’s game that are encouraging for Wolves.

Gomes seems to be the ideal fit for Gary O’Neil

As explained by Keen, not only can Gomes beat his man on the flank, but he can also score, assist, and be an all-around nuisance for the opposition in multiple areas in attack.

Being a player who can be utilised in a range of roles, O’Neil will be thrilled to have captured the Portuguese gem, who was also wanted by Atletico Madrid this summer.

Early indications suggest that Gomes is a gifted player who moves fluidly across the field and is a member of the team with room to grow as he acquires experience.

Wolves may have signed the former Braga superstar at the ideal age of 21, as he made a strong impression while on loan at Estoril in 2023–24, when he scored 14 goals.
