‘Target’ for England post is Ange Postecoglou, the former Celtic manager

Ange Postecoglou, a former Celtic manager, is an unexpected candidate to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager.

The Australian has shown himself to be a serious contender to take Southgate’s place, which was left empty yesterday. Two days after England lost the Euro 2024 final to Spain 2-1, the England manager announced his resignation.

During his eight years in charge of the national squad, they advanced to two finals, one semi-final, and one quarter-final in important competitions.

The FA’s current task is to find a replacement for Southgate, and that process is already well under way.

Numerous candidates have already been mentioned, including Jurgen Klopp and current Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

The latter has already been eliminated, but Graham Potter, who is unemployed, is the front-runner for the job. The Telegraph now reports that the FA sees Postecoglou as a series alternative, which is a shocking revelation.

A Scottish Cup and two Scottish Premierships were won by him with Celtic before to his move to Tottenham Hotspur 12 months ago.

He led Spurs to a fifth-place Premier League result the previous season, guaranteeing them a spot in the Europa League this year. According to the report, Postecoglou was being followed by the FA even before he joined Celtic.

His tenure as head coach of Australia’s national team from 2013 to 2017 may make him a target for an approach. It is anticipated that Lee Carsley, the current U21 manager, will be given temporary leadership until Southgate’s permanent replacement is announced.

Considering that Postecoglou has only been Spurs manager for a single year, it is unclear if a change of scenery would be appealing at this point.

Tonight, Postecoglou will be in Scotland for a preseason friendly at Tynecastle Park between Spurs and Hearts.
