Josef Bursik, the goalkeeper for Hibernian, can’t wait to face off against Rangers star Jack Butland in Scottish football after growing up idolizing the player in Stoke City’s junior setup.
Before securing a move to Belgium in January 2023, Bursik spent six years with Stoke. He is currently on a season-long loan from Club Brugge to Easter Road.
But, after failing to make an impact, the former England Under-21 international was sent to the reserve team, so the move didn’t exactly go as planned.
Eighteen months later, Hibs has given him a chance, and he’s prepared to seize it. Particularly considering that Butland had been so enthusiastic about the Scottish Premiership during their correspondence before his most recent relocation.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper said, “My idol at the time was Jack Butland going to Stoke.” “After a few weeks, I was working out with him every day.
It was absurd, and I gained a lot of knowledge from him. “Before coming here, I sent him a message. We always communicate briefly. When he was at Crystal Palace, which is my local team, he was down my way.
“He sang a lot of accolades for the league when I chatted with him. He had a fantastic season the previous year, earning him mentions in and around the England team.
Well done, sir. Despite some difficult years, he has done incredibly well. He and I get along great, and I’ve learnt a lot from him.
It would be nice to have him around for the season. To compete against him would be fantastic.” Butland’s outstanding debut season at Ibrox earned him the title of Rangers’ Men’s Player of the Year.
The former Manchester United and Crystal Palace goalkeeper experienced his own difficult times before becoming revitalized as the Light Blues’ starting number one.
For this reason, Bursik draws comparisons to his current professional situation. He continued, “I’m buzzing for him.” “He went through a difficult period, which is why it’s crucial to continue playing games. You regain that self-assurance.
I’m in a comparable circumstance. I’ve had a rough year and a half due to injuries and other issues; things haven’t quite worked out.
I now find myself in a similar situation where I enjoy going there, feel secure, and want to participate. “Hopefully we can do some great things this season.”
When Bursik joined Hibernian, it was said that he had turned down offers from “several clubs” to be David Gray’s first manager.
Bursik gave the following explanation: “Over the last few weeks, I spoke with [sporting director] Malky [Mackay] quite a bit, and he really sold the club to me.” “We spoke about the size of the club, the big games that the club are involved in, and that we want to do better than we did last season; it’s something I wanted to be a part of.”
