Todd Cantwell will be convinced to seek a Rangers exit
Rangers manager Philippe Clement should let midfielder Todd Cantwell go this summer, according to Keith Jackson. Jackson wrote for the Daily Record’s website on July 15, stating that in order for Clement to change the present culture at Ibrox, players like Cantwell need be “politely persuaded” to go.
The journalist also mentioned James Tavernier and Connor Goldson as players whose departures are critical in changing the Gers’ mindset, following Clement’s statement that no player in the squad is immune from being sold. Jackson stated, “Clement must form a new leadership group if he is to change the culture within his own dressing room. “Todd Cantwell may be another who is politely persuaded to assess options elsewhere.”
Clement’s words that every player except Jack Butland is out for sale this summer should serve as a reminder to everyone at Auchenhowie, particularly Cantwell, who has pleased to deceive in recent months. While Cantwell’s goalscoring record at Ibrox isn’t poor, his tendency to drift in and (more often) out of games has left fans and analysts alike hoping for his departure in the transfer window [Four Lads, 17 June].
Particularly with Clement leading a mass overhaul of the squad at Ibrox, he certainly won’t see Cantwell as irreplaceable, particularly after his waning form towards the end of last season.
Cantwell missed the Gers’ most recent pre-season friendly with Ajax due to injury, so he watched as players like Tom Lawrence, who has been linked with a move away, staked a claim in his customary position. As a result, with the new campaign quickly coming, Clement and Cantwell must decide whether selling the 26-year-old is the wisest move this summer [Sunday Mail, 17 June].
