Jamie Carragher has previously spoken his opinions about Gareth Southgate continuing to lead England.

Before the Euro 2024 final, Liverpool star Jamie Carragher already expressed his opinion about Gareth Southgate. The match will take place in Berlin between England and Spain.

Whatever happens later this evening in the European Championship final between Spain and the Three Lions, Jamie Carragher, the icon of Liverpool and former England international, feels that Gareth Southgate should remain in his role as manager.

Despite leading his national teams to consecutive finals in the premier UEFA competition, Southgate has not been able to bring out the best in players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, a star for Liverpool.

Although England hasn’t crossed the finish line yet, he may highlight his performance in big tournament knockout rounds as a benefit of his leadership.

“I always feel that an international manager, if the players and his FA don’t want him to leave, then it always feels strange leaving after a Euros,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “It seems to me that you depart after the World Cup.

“He would have most likely quit if we had advanced to the quarterfinals in Switzerland because he would have faced intense scrutiny and criticism in his long-standing position.

But regardless of what happens tonight, I believe it would be appropriate to end it at the World Cup in America if he leaves this feeling strong.

“If I were in Gareth’s shoes, I would be asking myself if I would want to hand this side over to someone else in the hopes that they would go on to win a World Cup.

I hope Gareth follows suit, since I would continue for a few more years if it were up to me.”

“Club museums hardly give a mention to near misses,” Carragher had written earlier in the day in his Daily Telegraph column. In contrast, England has resorted to celebrate its grittier setbacks.

It indicates a higher willingness on the part of the nation to accept second, third, or fourth best, which might foster a culture of lesser aspirations. We have been the biggest underachievers in the world at important events for far too long.

The Italians should have been defeated, but they were given too much credit for losing to them in penalty shootouts during the semifinals and even the most recent European Championship.
