As Kylian Mbappe gets ready to leave, the French powerhouses are eager to spend big this summer, which could be bad news for Liverpool in the race for the superstar from Napoli.
A significant blow to Liverpool’s hopes of acquiring Khvicha Kvaratskhelia of Napoli may be on the horizon as a result of rumors that Paris Saint-Germain is getting ready to make a massive $220 million double raid on the Serie A team this summer.
After his incredible debut season for Napoli in 2022–23, where he scored 14 goals and sent out 17 assists in 34 games to help the Italian team win its first league title in 33 years, the Reds were originally linked to a move for the 23-year-old last year.
Now that Georgia, the tournament’s youngest team, had an outstanding performance at Euro 2024, Liverpool’s interest has been aroused once more.
When Kvaratskhelia first joined Napoli in July 2022, he signed a five-year contract, but there are escalating rumors that the Italians are eager for him to sign a new contract to stay with the team.
The Georgian’s current Transfermarkt valuation is $87 million (£67 million/€80 million), but it’s expected that a significantly higher price will be paid for his talents.
Liverpool and the player are still closely linked, but if PSG decides to outbid them with their large budget, then there may be less chance of a transfer.
The Ligue 1 winner reportedly made a significant offer to sign Kvaratskhelia and colleague Victor Osimhen this summer, according to Corriere dello Sport in Italy.
The French team allegedly donated $217 million (£168 million/€200 million) to the campaign in the hopes that its extravagant wealth would persuade Napoli to change its mind.
Napoli is unlikely to let two of its key players depart at the same moment, and new manager Antonio Conte is determined to keep Kvaratskhelia at the team.
Although it is generally believed that Kvaratskhelia will not be leaving Napoli this summer, his representative has even said that his client will be signing a new contract to remain with the team.
On the other hand, Mamuka Jugeli acknowledged that Aurelio De Laurentiis, the club president, is ultimately in charge.
As reported by Corriere dello Sport, Jugeli said: “Kvaratskhelia without the Champions League? Then he wants to win the Scudetto. For the future everything depends on the president of Napoli. If he thinks of selling Kvara, he will do. If he wants the renewal, he will renew.”
With Kylian Mbappe leaving PSG for Real Madrid this summer, the French outfit is keen to do their very best to replace the massive hole the 25-year-old has left.
With the club also set to save a fortune in wages following the Frenchman’s departure, it has a very strong hand to play in its bid to sign Kvaratskhelia.
For Liverpool, this spells bad news – even if new boss Arne Slot may have ‘$194m’ to spend this summer under the proposed new financial fair play rules.
The Reds, however, has been told they would need to break their current transfer record to bring Kvaratskhelia on board this summer.
