On Thursday, the NFL lost one of its best defensive brains in history. At the age of 84, Monte Kiffin, a league coach for almost thirty years, including a time with the Cowboys, passed away.
Ole Miss, where his son Lane Kiffin serves as head coach, made the announcement on Thursday. As a member of Jason Garrett’s staff, Kiffin served as the defensive coordinator during the 2013 campaign. In the last week of the season, the Cowboys (8-8) were eliminated from the postseason.
In 2014, Kiffin was employed by the Cowboys under new head coach Rod Marinelli.
More people are familiar with Kiffin from his 13 years with the Buccaneers, when he and Tony Dungy developed the renowned “Tampa 2” plan, which helped the franchise win its first Super Bowl following the 2002 campaign.
In 1983, Kiffin began his NFL career as a linebackers coach with the Packers, who were the first of nine NFL organizations to hire him.
In addition, he was a coach for the Jaguars, Vikings, Jets, Saints, Titans, and Bills. Alongside his son Lane, Kiffin was on the USC staff for a while.
Most recently, he was an Ole Miss consultant. Prior to his time in the NFL, Kiffin held head coaching positions at North Carolina State (1980–1982), Nebraska, and Arkansas.
