Rangers get a boost in their pursuit of a club record signing; Philippe Clement likes him.
Rangers have a busy summer ahead of them as they try to correct last season’s faults and defeat archrivals Celtic to the league title. Last October, Philippe Clement succeeded Michael Beale as Rangers manager, and he led the Glasgow giants to the title. They tightened the gap on Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, but fell short of winning the championship in the final weeks.
However, a new season is on the horizon, and their second-place league performance last season means they must compete in the play-offs to qualify for the 2024-25 Champions League.
The Champions League play-off opponents will be drawn later this month, on July 22nd, thus time is running out for Rangers to get their summer business over the line.
Clement will want to make his imprint on this Rangers squad, and he has stated openly that he wants to make Fabio Silva’s loan deal permanent. After signing the loan agreement in January, Clement stated, “I would prefer to buy Fabio, but he was too expensive for the club, so it’s on loan.”
But it is clear that Clement rates the 21-year-old highly and still sees a future for him in Scotland.
Silva has since returned to parent club Wolves after his loan deal expired, but the Premier League outfit have given a major sign that he could be sold this summer.
Wolves have jetted out to Spain for their pre-season preparations but have left Silva out of their travelling squad.
Manager Gary O’Neil called up 29 players for the pre-season visit but left out Silva, suggesting that he is up for sale.
Rangers could now strike bargain Fabio Silva deal
Wolves have made it blindingly clear that Silva is not in their long-term plans.
He arrived at Molineux for a club-record fee of £35million in 2020 but he has painfully failed to live up to expectations.
Wolves will be unable to recoup that cost this summer, and a deal at a discount appears to be on the cards if Rangers act swiftly. Clement revealed that he intended to sign Silva on a permanent basis last January, and he may now have the opportunity to do so this summer.
