Rangers set for huge loss as James Tavernier linked with summer transfer
Dan Bardell believes James Tavernier would be a “huge loss” for the Rangers this summer, but acknowledges that every player has a price. The Scottish Sun claimed (4 July) that Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah is keeping an eye on the 32-year-old Rangers captain and is interested in signing him.
The veteran full-back had already been connected to a reunion with Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq, and Al-Qadsiah’s hire of ex-Gers CEO James Bisgrove lends credence to those rumors. According to Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell, Tavernier will eventually make the decision, and he believes he may be swayed if a hefty contract offer is presented. Bardell told Ibrox News exclusively that Tavernier is a fixture at Rangers.
“He’s been there for a long time and has been an excellent player for them over the years. Every athlete has a price, and a deal is also contingent on the individual’s objectives. “If he believes he can go over there and double his salary at this point in his career, he will most likely do so. It would be a significant loss for the Rangers.
“Sometimes you do have to refresh the squad so maybe it could be time to move on for both parties. He’ll only go if the move is right for him, Rangers can accept a bid but it will be Tavernier’s choice.“
Clement may find it difficult to replace the 32-year-old’s impact on the transfer market due to his unique attributes, but he is nearing the end of his career.
Rangers could lose James Tavernier to Saudi Arabia
The Rangers captain has been a hugely important player for the club since joining in 2015, not least for his contribution at the other end of the pitch.
Moreover, there is no doubt Philippe Clement would miss his skipper’s influence both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
Tavernier has now scored over 100 goals for the club, registering 17 goals and 10 assists across his 38 Scottish Premiership appearances last term – a fantastic contribution for a defender.
The riches on offer in Saudi Arabia are also likely to play a significant role in any decision Tavernier makes; at this juncture in his career, the money may be too good to pass up.
