Following Wolves’ loan-to-buy signing of Celta Vigo star Jorgen Strand Larsen, former Everton manager Keith Wyness stated he is “not a big fan” of loan agreements.
The 66-year-old, who ran a football consultancy advising elite clubs after serving as CEO of Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009, asserted that clubs “never get full commitment from loanees” and that the 24-year-old will be considering “what is in his best interest” in an interview with Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.
The player has committed to stay with Wolves “until 2029” if “certain clauses” are fulfilled, according to the club, who confirmed Larsen’s arrival on loan on July 2. With 14 Denmark caps under his belt, the 6′ 4in star scored 13 goals in 39 games for Celta Vigo last season in all competitions.
Football Insider revealed on Sunday (30 June) that Wolves’ option to buy for Larsen is worth around £25million.
Wyness ‘not a fan’ of Wolves deal as Larsen heads to Molineux
Wyness insisted he has “never really believed” in loan deals, claiming there are “too many loose ends”.
“Wolves have had a pretty chequered history in terms of bringing young forward talent to the club,” he said on the Insider Track podcast of Football Insider.
“They spent a lot of money on Fabio Silva, and it didn’t work out. A few more have also been called into doubt.
“To an extent, loan transactions are fantastic. “Is the player genuinely dedicated? Does it help both teams? “Why would a team loan out a player rather than include him in the starting lineup? He will be more valuable if he scores 40 goals.
Because there are so many unanswered questions, I’ve never been a big fan of loan transactions. “Loanees never fully commit since, in my opinion, there is never a guarantee that they will stay with the team for the long run.
Larsen will be thinking about what is in his best interest, or ‘what if I get injured?’
“Loan deals are okay, but I’m not a big fan.”
