After allowing only 18.5 points per game last season, good for seventh in the league, the Dallas Cowboys signed former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer to take over as the defensive coordinator this season.
As he approaches his fourth season in Dallas, Cowboys safety Malik Hooker has shared some perspective on what it’s like to work with his new DC.
During a recent podcast interview, Hooker and Keyshawn Johnson discussed the defensive unit’s success from the previous season and how they don’t anticipate many changes.
Hooker also mentioned his new coach’s reserved demeanor, saying, “You may not always see him in your meetings, but on that field, you’re going to hear from him.”
Former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was hailed by Hooker as a fantastic player-coach who allowed his players to be themselves.
Zimmer was also commended for not trying to alter too many of the aspects that made this group so successful the previous season.
After an unsuccessful season with the Indianapolis Colts due to injuries, Hooker found fresh life in Dallas’ secondary past season, where he had 50 tackles and an interception.
It’s understandable that the safety doesn’t want to see too many changes given that he participated in 16 games for the second year in a row and has only missed four games in his three years with the Cowboys.
He’s bringing a good bunch of men with him, and it’s encouraging to hear that Zimmer is making an impact without overextending himself.
With a few minor tweaks, this should once again be one of the league’s most elite defenses.
