With the exception of the Miami Heat, almost every Eastern Conference team that is vying for a title is adding stars to their roster.
The Philadelphia 76ers are the most frequently mentioned destination for Paul George, the New York Knicks added star big Mikal Bridges, and the defending champion Boston Celtics stayed stacked.
It’s nearly a given that forward Tobias Harris will join with another team if the Sixers sign George in free agency. Dan Favale of Bleacher Report listed Harris as the Heat’s top free agent target because the team could use more scoring in the forward room.
Harris’ stock has not fallen to the point where a minimum bargain is acceptable. However, maybe Miami may persuade him with a somewhat significant position and the opportunity to restore his long-term worth,” Favale reported.
“Failing that, if he’s willing to sign for the mini MLE, the Heat have avenues they can explore to ensure it’s available.” Inverse Kevin Love and Caleb Martin turned down their option, which left the front office in Miami facing a difficult choice.
Harris isn’t an option if they decide to try to sign Martin to a long-term contract.
The 31-year-old was a complete nonent in the postseason last year, despite averaging 17.2 points and 6.5 rebounds on 48.7 percent shooting.
The good news for the Heat is that their lack of availability is actually their biggest problem rather than their NBA playoff performance.
Harris fits the template the Heat need, having played in more than 60 games in each of the previous five seasons.
