After a stint in Saudi Arabia, Ian Cathro will take over as head coach of Portuguese Primeira Liga team Estoril.
Throughout his coaching career, Cathro has served as an assistant manager on multiple occasions.
He worked with Nuno Espirito Santo at both Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves, as well as at Newcastle United with Rafa Benitez and Steve Clarke. Most recently, Cathro left Al-Ittihad to work with Nuno Espirito Santo.
It is anticipated that Cathro will be named Estoril’s next head coach; this will be his second head coaching position.
His first return was when he moved from the Magpies to Hearts in 2016 to take over as manager at Tynecastle.
Nevertheless, Cathro was fired in August following his team’s inability to advance past the League Cup group stage at the start of the 2017–18 season, having held the position for less than a year.
Thus, his upcoming position at Estoril will mark his first head coaching position in over seven years.
His job is to assist Estoril, who placed 13th in the previous season with 33 points from 34 games played, in keeping their spot in the Portuguese first division.
The Portuguese club has agreed to terms for Cathro, who will turn 38 next month, to become head coach.
Cathro started his coaching career as the academy manager at Dundee United before moving to Rio Ave to work alongside Espirito Santo.
The club will confirm Cathro’s position once it confirms the departure of current head coach Vasco Seabra.
