Clement can finally replace Davis in Rangers move for £25k-p/w star

Glasgow Rangers’ lack of success previous season was attributed to a number of factors. As the Premiership season came to a close, the Ibrox side collapsed, with some senior leaders unable to motivate the team when things became difficult. Injuries also didn’t help matters, as Philippe Clement had to play numerous games without several key players, most notably Abdallah Sima and Ridvan Yilmaz.

The Light Blues’ undoing came from their inability to defeat Celtic during the 2023/24 season, including a 1-0 loss in the Scottish Cup final. Rangers have only won one Old Firm game in 90 minutes since August 2021, and it came after Celtic had already won the League title during the 2022/23 season. What’s the reason? A lack of control in the middle has allowed Celtic to dominate the game, giving them the advantage.

It is clear the Gers miss someone like Steven Davis, who was able to dictate play in these types of matches.

Steven Davis’ Rangers statistics
The Northern Irishman enjoyed two wonderful spells at the Light Blues, making a total of 362 appearances while lifting a host of honours during both his spells north of the border.

Despite his advancing years, Davis was crucial in everything positive about Rangers under Steven Gerrard, none more so than during the 2020/21 campaign which saw the club finally end their decade-long wait for a league title.

The midfielder finished that season with an 89% pass success rate, averaging 81.7 touches per game, winning 57% of his ground duels, and being dribbled past only 0.7 times per match, demonstrating his ability on the ball, which allowed him to control the entire game from the midfield area. He was Gerrard’s conductor in that Rangers team, and it’s no coincidence that since his career-ending injury in 2022, the club has lacked control and bite in the heart of the pitch.

Even his record versus Celtic is excellent, particularly in his second stay in Glasgow. Davis has played 13 Old Firm matches since rejoining the Gers in January 2018, losing only three.
