Despite having lived most of his life in England, McLean acknowledges that Scottish football helped to mold him into the player he is today.
The 32-year-old talked about his career on an SPFL Scotland Scrapbook episode amid rumors of a possible return to Rangers and their continued interest.
It truly helped shape who I am now. It provided me with a platform to continue forward and advance my career and opened up a lot of possibilities.
The SPFL is a location where I have evidently practiced my craft. I had a great time playing in the SPFL, even returning to Arbroath after we were relegated that season while we were in League 1.
It was a place that brought out the best in me and provided me with the means to advance, relocate to the South, play in the Championship, and eventually get a chance to play in the Premier League.
It truly helped shape who I am now. It provided me with a platform to advance my career and offered up a lot of options.”
For the most part of the previous season, McLean captained the Canaries and did not miss a single game during the Championship.
In all competitions, he played mostly as a defensive midfielder although he also added two goals and five assists.
