Ashleigh Plumptre confident of her gallantry and early return for Olympic games
Ashleigh Plumptre, a Super Falcons defender, has gone to social media to share footage of her recovery from an injury in the hopes of returning in time for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. On Sunday, the 26-year-old posted videos from a weekend training session with fitness and rehabilitation coach Warren Williams to her Instagram feed. “Another snippet from another weekend with Woz!” She captioned the image, “Energetic and functional training.” Plumptre, who was injured in March, missed Nigeria’s final Paris Olympics qualifier against Banyana Banyana of South Africa.
The former Leicester City player is a third-generation Nigerian who can play for the Falcons through her Lagos-born grandparents. Plumptre, who had previously represented England at several young levels, debuted for Nigeria in 2022 after obtaining international clearance and a Nigerian passport. She has since earned 22 caps for the Super Falcons.
Plumptre played for the Super Falcons at the last FIFA Women’s World Cup, when they advanced to the round of 16. Her return to fitness will provide a big boost to Randy Waldrum’s team as they prepare for their first Olympics appearance since 2008.
