This move could help the Cowboys
In 2023, the Dallas Cowboys had one of the best regular seasons in the NFL.
Sure, Dallas started the season trailing the Philadelphia Eagles as the favorite in the NFC East, but as the season progressed and Nick Sirianni’s team completely collapsed because of almost unheard-of coordinator collapses, Dallas emerged as the division’s pride, even though they ultimately lost to the Green Bay Packers in the ugly fashion 32-48 in the postseason.
Even though the Cowboys were widely regarded as “losers” heading into the offseason due to the departure of players like Michael Gallup in free agency and Leighton Vander Esch for retirement, the team nevertheless added some intriguing players in the draft and seemed certain to secure a double-digit season again under Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott.
However, even though the team was able to acquire a few intriguing possibilities in both the draft and free agency to help bolster their attack, they still need to add at least one more offensive weapon to help bolster their lineup.
Thankfully, a player who precisely matches that description was just released by the Raiders, providing them with an opportunity to make a clear strategic upgrade before the 2024 campaign begins.
The Dallas Cowboys could benefit from a WR3 like Hunter Renfrow.
The Cowboys have a few options to complete their offense heading into the 2024 season, as they already have CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cook locked in as their WR1 and WR2, respectively.
The competition for the WR3 spot is fierce, as 2022 third-round pick Jalen Tolbert, 2023 seventh-round pick Jalen Brooks, 2024 sixth-round pick Ryan Flournoy, and return specialist Kavontae Turpin all contend.
Given that the Oregon State product is about to enter his eleventh year of professional career, this is a frightening prospect.
Renfrow could definitely cover the gap. Although the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Clemson product was selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft, he is a tried-and-true target who can run accurate routes against coverage, get open against zone, and generally act as the offensive safety blanket that eases the workload for quarterbacks like Prescott who need a little assistance underneath on third downs and in the end zone.
Unless, of course, Dallas really likes Tolbert going into Year 3, there really is no harm in giving Renfrow an opportunity if he is ready to take a prove-it deal with the Cowboys to pursue a ring and rehab his value.
The Raiders believe Brock Bowers could help replace Hunter Renfrow.
While the Raiders will unquestionably miss Renfrow this fall, as even if they did procure some talented players during the spring, they do call the Clemson product “Third and Renfrow” for a reason and his presence will be hard to replace straight up from the wide receiver spot.
Luckily, the Raiders selected Brock Bowers, the versatile tight end from Georgia, with their first-round selection.
Although Bowers will play tight end, it is more probable that he will occupy a hybrid role on “money” downs, akin to that of Renforw. “When you can, you strive to stay with [the greatest player available].
Because you’re adding to the football team—and we all know where we are right now—it can be harder than you realize at times. We search for both the present and the future.
However, with a player such as Brock, it would just be the scouting staff who knew where he was, what they thought of him, and what the coaching staff thought. According to Raiders Wire, Tom Telesco told reporters, “He’s really a pretty consensus guy.”
We adore Michael Mayer. Michael Mayer is my favorite. He’s a tremendously talented player who will advance significantly this season, Telesco continued.
But, whether it’s a tight end or a hybrid receiver, we had the opportunity to give the offense a new facet. He’s going to assist us there because we need more playmakers on that side of the ball.
A true junior in college, he is still extremely young and in the process of maturing, but he already possesses some natural football skills in addition to exceptional athleticism and speed.
Renfrow and Bowers, you know, technically, could play comparable roles in an offense, with the Georgia pass-catcher serving as the primary target for Gardner Minshew and/or Aiden O’Connel when they need to gain four yards quickly on third down.
Given that they could have maintained Renfrow and improved another position with a blue-chip prospect, was that really worth a first-round pick? Though it’s obvious to compare from a fit perspective, only time will tell.
