A potential replacement for Philippe Clement as Rangers captain the identity of James Tavernier’s replacement

The experienced full-back could be set to hand over the armband amid strong links with a move to Saudi Arabia

The news that Philippe Clement has chosen James Tavernier to wear the armband in lieu of him has convinced Rangers supporters that their skipper is almost ready to complete a summer transfer to the Middle East.

According to reports on Tuesday night, if Tavernier decides to quit the team in order to complete a permanent transfer to the Saudi Pro League, the Belgian will assign goalkeeper Jack Butland the responsibility of leading his revamped squad before to the start of the new campaign.

Since Steven Gerrard named him club captain in 2018, the 32-year-old defender has led the Light Blues.

The right-back’s goal-scoring exploits notwithstanding, the Gers Hall of Fame entrant has come under fire for winning just one league title in 2021, one Scottish Cup in 2022, and one League Cup the previous season.

The greatest-scoring defender in British history, Tavernier, is about to start his testimonial year at Govan, but he has been strongly connected to a reunion with former manager Steven Gerrard, who is reportedly prepared to make an offer to sign him to Al-Ettifaq.

He would receive a huge salary if he were to depart, and Rangers would probably gain a significant transfer fee as well.

The Daily Record reports that Clement will rely on seasoned goalkeeper Butland if Tavernier ends his nine-year tenure in Glasgow, putting an end to rumors of a high-profile return to the English Premier League this summer.

After an outstanding rookie season in goal, the former keeper for Stoke City, Crystal Palace, and Manchester United was chosen as the team’s “Player of the Year.”

Nottingham Forest made an unsuccessful £10 million attempt for the 31-year-old in January, but he may now stay at Ibrox for the duration.

And a substantial portion of the Gers fan base on social media has shown their approval of the news. For the past few years, they have been calling for a change in the team’s on-field leadership.

“This is a big call from Clement but a change has been needed,” a supporter remarked, “if this is true then can only imagine it’s because Tav is moving on!” The mindset required to lead us to the next level has not been exhibited by our captain.

Another said, “Massive statement from Clement.” A third said, “Well, I don’t think there could possibly be a bigger indicator to Tavernier’s time being up than Butland receiving the armband.

The end is nigh for James Tavernier at Rangers.” This call is extremely important.
