Roy Keane, a former Celtic player, has stated that he turned down big-money offers from major teams to transfer to Parkhead.
Roy Keane, a Manchester United icon and former Celtic player, said that he turned down Real Madrid before accepting to transfer to Celtic Park.
The Irish former midfielder spent a total of 12 years at Old Trafford, making 326 league matches and won everything there was to win.
By the time he departed United in 2005, Keane was 34 years old and had retired from international football after 14 years and 67 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Keane then joined Celtic, where he made only ten league games but won the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish League Cup before retiring.
But things could have been quite different, with Keane now stating that he turned down Real Madrid and other European giants to sign with the Hoops.
He said on The Overlap: “You know, I’ve always had a soft spot for Juventus.” And they gave me a deal, which I remember as not being particularly appealing at the moment.
“I was looking for a great offer. Bayern Munich was the club that offered me the best deal I’d ever received.
When I left United, I moved up to Celtic, although I might have spent a year and a half at Real Madrid. They offered me a year and a half. And I was like, Celtic is emotional, which is cool. I don’t mind making these types of judgments.
And I was 34 years old, and I was wondering, ‘Would I go to Madrid and have an impact?'” Gary Neville immediately chimed in, saying, “I didn’t realize you turned down Real Madrid.” Keane added, “I know.”
Keane previously stated that he did not kick a ball at Celtic because he was constantly injured.
What I did appreciate, for all of my comfort zone at Manchester United, and I enjoyed every minute of my time there, was the opportunity to spend six months in another dressing room.
There were one or two morons among the Celtic lads, but in overall, they are excellent young men. I socialized with different lads, had new dynamics, and thoroughly loved my time at Celtic.
