The Dallas Cowboys have come under fire for how Jerry Jones has handled the contracts of his key players.
Quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and edge rusher Micah Parsons have yet to receive a contract extension, and the company is apparently “nowhere near” extending them.
To exacerbate matters, a recent story claims that head coach Mike McCarthy is “fed up” with Jones’ incessant undermining of him. Rich Eisen, a longtime NFL insider, brought up the report and provided additional information.
According to Eisen, a former Cowboys personnel executive commented on McCarthy and Jones’s connection, saying, “It’s weird what’s going on, and it never really changes… Mike McCarthy is doing his best.
Some folks I’ve spoken with have suggested he’s ‘fed up with it a little bit.'”
According to Eisen, the quote is clearly the “juicy” component of this article, and it is mostly hearsay. However, he also states that if the claim is true and McCarthy is becoming frustrated, “Can you blame him?”
According to Eisen, McCarthy had to go home and explain to his family that he had no idea what would happen to him the following year, which was understandable irritation.
Jones, like the Cowboys’ key players, has not extended his head coach or the majority of McCarthy’s staff.
Jones spoke to reporters in April about the franchise extending players like Prescott and Lamb, and he provided a vague answer that offered no hope. Jones commented, “We’d like to see more leaves fall.”
This is a confusing statement considering Prescott, Lamb, Parsons, and McCarthy have all excelled at their respective jobs.
Prescott had 36 touchdowns, the most in the NFL. He also accumulated 4,516 yards, ranking third among all quarterbacks.
Lamb finished second in receiving yards with 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns, 50 yards and one score behind league leader Tyreek Hill. McCarthy has guided the Cowboys to three straight 12-5 seasons.
Though the squad has yet to reach the Super Bowl, three straight postseason berths can be considered successful.
If this allegation is accurate, it would add to the uncertainty that many pundits have expressed regarding Jones’ willingness to neglect enhancing the club during the winter.
The Cowboys made little or no effort to sign some of the top free agents.
While cap room is always an important consideration, the team could have worked to improve its squad in order to challenge for a Super Bowl berth again.
Jones’ “wait and see” ownership approach may come back to haunt him next season.
Prescott is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, and he may contemplate turning down any contract extension in favor of playing for another team that appreciates him more.
Lamb has also not attended OTAs or minicamp, prompting many to believe he would miss training camp until he is granted a legitimate contract.
Jones may need to take action to ensure that at least three of his great players, as well as his winning head coach, remain in-house.
