Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign came to an end on Sunday night, with a 1-0 defeat to Hungary in Stuttgart. As a result, the Scots finish last in Group A with one point, and despite the Tartan Army being praised for their support in Germany, the team fails to advance to the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time. We examine at how each player, including head coach Steve Clarke, performed during the competition.

1) Angus Gunn The goalie was appropriately questioned for his role in Scotland’s 5-1 defeat to Germany. He required a firmer hand to stop Florian Wirtz’s opening shot. However, the way the stopper responded against Switzerland and Hungary demonstrated his character. The Norwich City No. 1 made a pair of outstanding saves in each game to keep Scotland’s qualification hopes alive. He earned his reputation as Scotland’s top goalkeeper in Germany. 6| Getty Images

2) Jack Hendry The defender played every minute of every match and improved during the tournament. All three opponents targeted the right side of Scotland’s defence, but Hendry stood firm. He was the team’s best player against Hungary, and he departs the Euros with his reputation boosted. 7 | Getty Images.

3. Ryan Porteous. His tournament lasted barely 45 minutes after he was sent off for an ill-advised lunge at Germany’s Ilkay Gundogan. UEFA immediately punished him for two matches due to the recklessness and severity of the challenge. Will return home with a lot of regret. 2 | Getty Images.

4. Grant Hanley The 32-year-old was promoted to Porteous’ place and performed brilliantly, especially given his little playing time for Norwich City previous to the tournament. He stood up to his opponents’ physical challenges. Was also one of Scotland’s main goal scorers, hitting the post from close range against the Swiss and having Scotland’s finest chance late on against Hungary, but his curling effort was saved. 6| AFP via Getty Images
