McLean and his family are massive bluenoses and the 32-year-old could be tempted back up the road this summer
Kenny McLean, a lifelong Rangers fan, could finally accomplish his dream of playing for the team this summer. According to reports on Monday, the Norwich City vice-captain is among Philippe Clement’s goals for the upcoming season.
McLean, 32, is returning from Germany after making three substitute appearances for Scotland at the Euros, which were eliminated.
The midfielder will have a few weeks off before returning to Carrow Road for pre-season, but he may have other plans, with a dream move to Ibrox on the horizon.
McLean progressed through the Govan youth ranks before being discharged as a 16-year-old, ending his ambitions of playing for his beloved club.
Now, 16 years later, McLean could be on his way to playing for his childhood heroes if Gers executives can work out a deal with the Canaries.
The versatile player, who can also play centre-back, is under contract until 2026, but he may be allowed to depart if new manager Johannes Hoff Thorup decides he isn’t in his plans.
While McLean may be crossing his fingers that a deal can be reached, this is not the first time the former St Mirren and Aberdeen favourite has been linked with a move to Rangers.
He was first linked with a move to Glasgow in 2018, after his Pittodrie contract expired.
However, in an interview with Si Ferry’s Open Goal, he stated: “There was some chatter about Rangers, but nothing came of it for me.
“Even when I was out of contract at Aberdeen, I still had six months left on my contract, and there were negotiations, but nothing major, to be honest.
Nothing to get enthusiastic about because nothing was ever in front of me.
McLean was more open about his ambitions in an interview with the Athletic in 2021, saying: “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t something I’d want to do.
As a kid, that’s what you want to do, play for your boyhood team; right now, I’m about to play in the Premier League again, so I’m not thinking about it!
But that would be something very unique for me and my family.
I grew up a Rangers supporter, going to games with my father, and as a youngster in Glasgow, you support either Rangers or Celtic and want to play for one of them. So I was on the good side.”
More recently, McLean made no secret of his desire to wear the royal blue jersey when discussing his future with the Talk Norwich City podcast in 2022, admitting: “I think long term, it will be back in Glasgow.” “I get asked that a lot, honestly.
There is always gossip. But there has never been something in front of me that says, ‘There you go.’ Previously, there was more than just discussion.
It has never materialised into anything. “Would I love it someday? Of course. Of course, if you’ve been raised that way, I’d support them. “My family would be over the moon.”
